They have a long history in China, once favored as small dogs within royal courts, and later became known across Europe for their devotion to family life. They weren't bred to herd, hunt, or guard. What they've always been best at is simply staying close to the people they love.

His face can look deeply serious one moment, then light up completely the next, over a small treat, a comfortable spot, or the sound of you coming home. Pugs have a well known Latin phrase associated with them, multum in parvo, meaning roughly "much in little." It originally described their compact, sturdy build, but it fits their everyday presence just as well.

Pugs are a brachycephalic breed, meaning their shortened airways make it harder for them to cool down through panting in hot or humid weather. Walks are best scheduled during cooler parts of the day, with attention to shade and water.
